FLIE opens industrial electrification pilot facility

L-R: Simone van Tongeren (Deltalinqs), Richard Braal (TNO), Jeroen Koedam (Province of Zuid-Holland), Auke Ferwerda (Platform Zero), Magrita Noordmans (FME), Maaike van Asten (Municipality of Rotterdam), Petra de Groene (InnovationQuarter), Egbert van der Wal (Port of Rotterdam Authority).

Fieldlab Industrial Electrification (FLIE) is opening a new pilot facility at SubZero Rotterdam. Here, companies can work on Power-to-X technologies, such as converting sustainable electricity into hydrogen or industrial heat, and other solutions for industrial electrification. In doing so, FLIE is taking a concrete step towards accelerating industrial sustainability and strengthening the European manufacturing industry: a prime example of the developments being driven by LAUNCH₂.

The pilot facility is located at SubZero on Keileweg, in the Merwe-Vierhavens area (M4H) in Rotterdam. SubZero is developing into a climate technology hub where start-ups, scale-ups and industrial partners collaborate on sustainable solutions for the port and industry. The parties behind LAUNCH₂ are supporting this development by providing space, infrastructure and links to the port and industrial cluster.

On 1 April, the lease agreement for the pilot hall was signed by PlatformZero and TNO. The Port of Rotterdam Authority is involved in the development of the facility in its role as investor and facilitator. With the support of a grant from the province of Zuid-Holland, the necessary infrastructure is being realised, enabling the pilot hall to be brought into use.

Within the pilot hall, FLIE focuses on industrial end-users, technology providers, energy companies and research institutions that wish to take concrete steps towards the energy transition. The facilities are designed for technologies at an advanced stage of development (TRL 4–6) and support the transition from prototype to practical application.

Further information about FLIE and the pilot hall can be found at https://flie.nl/en/.
